"Fundations" is an all-encompassing literacy program that allows all students to develop solid foundations in reading and writing, while fostering phonological awareness and a knowledge of word-structures. At Allen Brook, our K - 2 students on Team Harmony participate in "Fundations" lessons daily that include activities such as these:
- Dry-erase boards, magnet boards and sky writing are used to practice spelling words and letter formations.
- Students practice reading fluency to develop automaticity, phrasing, and expression. They practice these skills by reading poetry, controlled texts, and books. They also read trick words, sounds and nonsense words.
- We use Fundations' Sound Cards or Magnetic Boards to reinforce phonemic awareness skills and understandings. We also "tap" our sounds to practice blending and segmenting.
- Students practice writing words in their Composition Books, sometimes practicing Rainbow Spelling and Vowel Spelling (ask your child to explain this engaging way to write!).
- Sky writing and gel boards are used to practice "trick words", words that cannot be "tapped", or "sounded out".
Bridges: Our new Math Program at Allen Brook
Our school district, Chittenden South Supervisory Union, CSSU, adopted a new math program this year, which will be implemented in our multi-age 1st and 2nd grade classrooms on Team Harmony. We are very excited in providing our students with inquiry-based, constructivist mathematics.
